Interview with the Healing Powers Series AUTHOR--NEW Books Coming Soon!

By Cal Orey
Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!
Pre-Orders for Dec. Release
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I grew up in the suburbs. It was a safe middle-class neighborhood with a mom, dad, two siblings, and a Dalmatian named Casey. Once in my teens, however, my imagination soared and in class my autobiographies were always read by the teachers who said I had a gift for creative writing and vivid imagination.

As time passed, I escaped suburbia boredom, and took to the road with a dog int tow. We traveled across America and Canada; a young boomer's Travels with Stone Fox knockoff of Steinbeck's adventures.  Once back in the Golden State I earned two degrees in English (Creative Writing), and ended up being a health journalist. Then, in 1999 I packed up my stuff and left the Bay Area and moved to the mountains. It was goal to write books and live at Lake Tahoe amid towering pine trees and near the water. I graduated to being the author of the popular Healing Powers Series published by Kensington and inspired by Mother Nature.

Tell us about your book? How did it get started?
As a contributing editor for a health magazine I was told by my editor that a publisher needed health book authors. I called an editorial consultant and was offered two choices: I could ghostwrite a book for a cardiologist or write a book on vinegar using a twist. I chose the latter. And The Healing Powers of Vinegar became number one of six books in a series. In the third edition, it show anyone who doesn’t know any better, that versatile vinegar can be used for so much more than Easter eggs and salads.
As a post-hippie girl from the West Coast, a natural, health-oriented lifestyle has always been around me. I’m talking a holistic way of eating and living. It turns out during my book research for the vinegar book that the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle is what I was doing—and I incorporated it into my series.  And it’s timeless. Just the other day I read this diet is ranked number one in plant-based diets and number three in healthful diets throughout the U.S. Here, take a quick look...

Ah, patience. You must be like a cat waiting to catch a mouse in the writing world. I have persevered for almost two decades to get the project on the topic that is close to my heart and soul—tea. At the end of 2017, The Healing Powers of Tea was published—paid off its advance and is attracting readers (Bestseller banner on many bookseller websites this year). This makes me smile because stories throughout my life are woven in each chapter to give it a dose of reality and originality. Yes, my paw print is on every page.
Fast-forward to the new book, The Healing Powers of Superfoods was unveiled January, 2019. This book is very close to me; and I am excited to see the proofs and advanced reader copies of Essential Oils due out in August 2019.

Dump Unwanted Pounds, Energize for Cozy Autumn (Jeans and Sweaters Season)

By Cal Orey
Welcome to a Buddha bowl, a perfect autumn salad choice for a new season, right? It is a vegetarian meal served on a bowl, which boasts an arrangement of superfoods, including ancient grains like cooked brown rice, beans, and hot fresh vegetables. All these farm-to-table foods are arranged in a nice Zen-like balance and in a creative manner to be easy on the eyes. It’s been around for several years at health spa resorts to pre-packaged at your favorite local grocery store to even hotel menus.

These are actually salads with whole foods, including vegetables and whole grains. You can add protein, whether it be poultry, fish, or even meat. It’s a complete meal in a bowl. The bowls are in style because they can be super fresh, super flavorful, and super convenient. If you’re hungry and want to eat fresh and healthy, you’ve come to the right place!
One fall a few years ago, I prepared a multitude of dishes that are fun but take time, such as casseroles to hearty soups. While working on a book, I made a super vow. Next time whatever I put together during a timeline crunch, it would be a Buddha bowl time to stay in the Zen.
BUDDHA BOWL
Salad
2-2 ½ cups kale mix, chopped
1 cup cruciferous vegetables, steamed or nuked

1/2 cup tofu, grilled
½ cup avocado, slices
½ cup tomatoes, slices
1/ 2 cup feta or cheddar cheese
1 cup brown rice, cooked

1/4 cup sunflower seeds, shelled (optional)
Parmesan cheese shavings (optional)
Dressing: You can make your own olive oil and balsamic vinegar or rice vinegar dressing; ratio 3 oil to 1 vinegar and add your favorite spices and herbs. Or you can also purchase a premium all-natural store bought variety, including chunky blue cheese, herbal, thousand island, or ranch dressing--or all of them!
Buddah Bowl and Yoga, Anyone?
In a bowl, place each ingredient separately in individual groups. Arrange each food item nicely for a nice presentation. Garnish with Parm cheese.  Serve with French bread. Slice, spread with butter and garlic powder Pop in the oven under the broiler until lightly toasted. Sprinkle with fresh parsley. Serves 2-3.
You can double the recipe if you like. *You can prepare these for ready-to-eat bowls. Or if you want to have more fun, put ingredients in ramekins and let people put together their own power bowls. Either way, it works! And you just may find the time to slip into a Zen-like zone and enjoy inner balance.

Tea and Four Seasons (with Superfoods)

In the 21st century the selection of teas and tisanes is forever expanding and attracting tea lovers. New, improved varieties are continue to attract people into the vast land of teas—often custom-tailored for the four seasons. Blends of specialty organic teas from a variety of countries including China and Sri Lanka attract. Scented and flavored teas are favorites including pumpkin spice for autumn and peppermint bark through the holiday season are in demand in homes, like mine, and at coffee and tea shops. And scented and flavored white tea and black tea with notes of florals, herbs, and fruits are favorites in the summertime as iced teas.
It’s the Season: Summer is a time to get a light touch and change of linens, clothes, opened screen windows, and fresh air, it’s time I relax in the morning with a cup of flavored black tea (for the caffeine boost) so I can get more physical and be more active in the longer days and nights of summertime. Iced tea makes a splash during this season of sun and frolic. Brewing black tea and infusing it with fresh citrus including limes, oranges, and lemons, in a pitcher filled with ice is a must-have. Pairing a glass of iced tea with summer fruit mini scones or cucumber tea sandwiches and fresh vegetable and fresh fruit salads to grilled fish is ideal. Healing Seasonal Teas: Fruit teas (such as blackberry and strawberry), white peony with fruit notes, and iced black tea are summer favorites to help the body cool down and feel energized. Other fruity profiles include blood orange, citrus hibiscus herbal, mango black, and peach fruit teas are ideal for the summertime. Superfoods with Tea: Blueberries, peaches, pineapple, and tomatoes.

Fall
It’s the Season: In the Sierra at Lake Tahoe and other regions around the United States and globe, there are hints of autumn, whether it is the transformation in hues of tree leaves or a crisp chill in the air. Tea is a joy during this new season. I love to sip a cup of cinnamon or any spice tea paired with a fresh, warm mini vanilla scone either homemade or purchased at a coffee shop in Seattle, the time I seem to visit.
Healing Seasonal Teas: Black and green flavored tea warmed with spices, pumpkin spice tea to peppermint bark, chocolate spice and gingerbread teas are in demand as well as green tea and green tea blends—with its flu and cold-fighting powers are always welcome during the autumn harvest. Not to ignore warming chai with its black tea and spices and Earl Grey, a black tea with orange peel, and oil of bergamot. Superfoods with Tea: Apples, grapefruit, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes.

Winter
It’s the Season: ‘Tis the season of colder days, longer nights. It’s a time when wildlife hibernates, the first snowfall arrives, firewood is stacked, and the heater kicks on. Savoring a cup of hot black tea for energy in the morning and afternoon is perfect paired with tea cookies infused with Earl Grey or lavender.
Healing Seasonal Teas: Dark and black teas and chai are ideal for wintertime. Holiday spice tea such as black Ceylon tea with notes of orange and cinnamon, as well as herbal teas including chamomile to help keep calm during hectic holidays and rooibos blends are popular through Valentine’s Day.
Superfoods with Tea: Cabbage, chia seeds, citrus fruits, and pears.

Spring
It’s the Season: Once winter days are almost over, it’s time for renewal and to make your home and body lighter for warmer days ahead. It’s common for me to brew a pot of white tea in the afternoon and a chamomile flower blend at night to welcome sleep during the Daylight Savings Time change. Healthful sandwiches paired with teas, vegetarian entrees, and green salads with tea-infused dressings come into play. It’s time to shed extra unwanted winter weight, and get a move on with lighter fare.
Healing Seasonal Teas: Detoxifying green tea and citrus tea (hot or iced) are popular during this time of lightening up. Organic spring jasmine, chamomile citrus, organic white peony, and rooibos blends are superb springtime teas that are perfect for the season of fresh beginnings. Superfoods with Tea: Apricots, artichokes, carrots, and spinach.
